As teachers of adults, higher education instructors are expected to answer their questions. In this mess, those questions can be daunting to answer, and that is when there are questions. Often, what students are bringing are incredibly raw feelings: grief, despair, confusion, fear.
How might we respond to students in compassionate, realistic and en-couraging ways in the face of danger and uncertainty? What do we do when our own grief, despair, confusion, and fear are activated in the room?
What are our various tasks in this moment, as instructors, compatriots, colleagues, peers, elders, role models and initiators?
Professors are not therapists, and so, how do you teach in this mess?
Janine de Novais is a writer, sociologist and teacher committed to education as the practice of freedom. She is the author of “Brave Community: Teaching for a Post Racist Imagination.”
Martha Crawford is an essayist, a psychotherapist for thirty years, now focused on group/workshop facilitation, liberation psychology, & community resilience.
